VOLUNTEER BUILDING AND WORKSHOPS
Community at Work
At Happy Castle, we offer two distinct opportunities to get involved with our construction projects: Workshops and Volunteer Building. Each serves a unique purpose and provides a different experience, so you can choose the one that best fits your interests and schedule.
workshops
Workshops are in-depth educational courses designed for those who want a comprehensive understanding of sustainable building techniques. These sessions are led by experienced instructors and cover topics such as Superadobe Earthbag Dome construction, solar power installation, rainwater harvesting, permaculture design and more.
Participants will gain hands-on experience and theoretical knowledge in a structured format, ensuring they leave with the skills to replicate these projects on their own. Workshops are typically multi-day events with a registration fee to cover materials, instruction, and meals. They’re perfect for anyone looking to invest in their education while contributing to Happy Castle’s growth. During Phase One, we anticipate that workshop attendees will make up the initial bulk of our labor force and member poll as we recruit Villagers from their ranks.
Volunteer Building
Volunteer Building is a shorter, more casual way to get involved. Volunteers join us for a few hours or a day, assisting with specific tasks like mixing earth for domes, painting, or planting in the desert nursery. Unlike workshops, Volunteer Building doesn’t aim to teach the full process. Instead, it’s about rolling up your sleeves and helping us tackle immediate tasks. It’s a fantastic option for locals, travelers, or anyone who wants to contribute without a long-term commitment.
To volunteer at Build Days, look ahead into our calendar to find scheduled projects and book a campsite for the corresponding date. Show up, set up, and get busy! There's lots to do.
EARTHBAG DOMES
Sustainable Building with Superadobe and Hyperadobe
At Happy Castle, our Superadobe Dome Workshops are designed to immerse participants in the art and science of Earthbag construction, a sustainable building method that uses natural materials found onsite to create resilient, eco-friendly structures. These workshops provide a unique hands-on experience, empowering attendees with the skills and knowledge needed to construct their own off-grid dream homes while contributing to the growth and development of our commune. Every workshop is interspersed with a plethora of team-building activities and events so that we don't just show you how to build an earthbag dome, but we also show you how to have a really good time doing it. As a community building project, our ultimate mission is connecting likeminded dreamers, fostering collaboration, and building a better world together. To us, the workshops, even more than the festival, is the place where community grows. However, if you want to doublecheck for yourself, you can. Every workshop attendee receives a free wristband to the next festival as a final thank you for building Happy Castle.
What is Superadobe?
Superadobe is an innovative building technique developed by architect Nader Khalili, which utilizes long, tubular, polyethylene bags that are cut to size, filled with local soil, and layered on top of one another to create strong and insulating structures. The method is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly, making it an ideal choice for off-grid living in diverse climates. Superadobe domes are earthquake-resistant, energy-efficient, and naturally blend into the surrounding landscape, promoting a harmonious relationship with the environment. These domes will make up the vast bulk of the initial structures built onsite.
Workshop Structure
Our Superadobe Dome Workshops combine theory with practical application, allowing participants to engage in every aspect of the construction process. Each workshop is structured to accommodate various skill levels, from beginners to those with prior construction experience. The typical workshop will be led by two to three seasoned builders leading a crew of ten to fifteen students. The core of the workshop involves hands-on building activities where participants will work alongside skilled instructors to construct a superadobe dome.
Workshop lengths will vary depending on the size and complexity of the structure being built, but the typical workshop will focus on a 20ft diameter dome and last ten days from site-prep to capping the dome. Dome-building workshoppers are always welcome to stay for the plastering portion of the dome at no extra charge, but this portion is typically offered as a standalone workshop as well, so plan to stay beyond the initial ten days and expect new friends to arrive to join you.
As the campground grows, so will the various comforts offered to our students and residents, including access to a communal kitchen, bathrooms and showers, EV charging, and even student housing, but the very first workshops will be pretty off-grid with students bringing their own tents, using a temporary camp kitchen, pit-toilets, and showering less frequently. Throughout the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to connect with fellow attendees at various team-building events organized on and offsite. In the community-building spirit of Happy Castle, participants are encouraged to get to know one another, share ideas, participate in activities, and collaborate on projects. Whether you're simply here to learn or plan to start your own project right away, these workshop are an incredibly unique place to get to know likeminded builders working alongside you, each with their own skills, experiences, and dreams. So network, make friends, and build your community.

We will carve out amphitheaters that provide natural spaces for gatherings, performances, and workshops. These earthen structures will blend seamlessly with the surroundings, offering a unique venue for artistic expression and community bonding. Surrounded by the beauty of the desert, attendees can enjoy music, dance, and storytelling under the vast sky.
Tunnels and Dry Riverbeds
Winding tunnels will create intriguing passageways through the landscape, inviting exploration and adventure. These tunnels can serve as pathways for guests to navigate the campground while providing shaded areas to escape the sun. Alongside these, dry riverbeds will mimic natural waterways, enhancing the ecosystem and guiding rainwater to designated areas for effective water management.
Secluded Campsites
Thoughtfully placed secluded campsites will provide peaceful retreats within the campground. These intimate spaces will be nestled in natural settings, allowing guests to connect with nature and find solitude amidst the vibrant community. Each campsite will be strategically designed to offer privacy while remaining accessible to communal activities.
Berms for Wind Protection
To ensure comfort for all visitors, we will construct berms strategically positioned to provide wind protection throughout the campground. These earthen mounds will create microclimates that enhance the outdoor experience, allowing for comfortable gatherings and activities without the disruption of harsh winds.
Gigantic Pyramid
A central feature of our Earthworks project will be the construction of a gigantic pyramid, serving as a focal point for the commune. This striking structure will not only be a visual marvel but also a versatile space for gatherings, workshops, and art exhibitions, symbolizing our commitment to building a community that stands tall against the challenges of modern life.
Dry Moat
Encircling the entire campground, the dry moat is a monumental excavation designed for both functionality and aesthetics. This channel will serve as a protective barrier while creating a unique landscape feature that enhances the commune’s identity. It will also provide a space for rainwater collection and natural habitats for local wildlife.
