Building a Better Model: The Cooperative Experiment

At Happy Castle, every hour of work isn’t just labor—it’s an investment. Our cooperative non-profit model is built on the principle that those who build the community should own it. Whether it’s the campground, the festivals, the farm, the dome school, or whatever else our members bring to life, Happy Castle is a living testament to what’s possible when entrepreneurial ambition meets collective ownership.

But let’s be real: money talks. If we want to change the world, we have to do more than reject the broken system—we have to thrive within it to prove that a radical alternative is viable. Growth for us isn’t about getting rich; it’s about making "opting out" of the rat race accessible to more people. By pooling our skills, resources, and ideas, we’re forging a model that prioritizes community prosperity over individual wealth hoarding.

From Dream to Reality: Building the Foundation

In these early days, we have to be clear-eyed about the reality: Happy Castle won’t see a profit right away. The first years will be about survival—fulfilling our Kickstarter campaign, constructing self-sustaining infrastructure (water, power, housing), and laying the foundation of our labor model. Early members aren’t just joining a cooperative; they’re forming one. They are the visionaries, the risk-takers, the ones putting in the sweat equity to prove this can work.

For us, this isn’t just a job—it’s direct action. It's activism. It’s a chance to build a life and a community outside of the self-destructive, alienating systems that define modern society. If you’re a worldbuilder, a dreamer, a doer, this is the place to create. Political Science and Sociology majors are welcome to finally put heir "useless" degrees to work. We don’t have to stand by while greed, war, poverty, and environmental collapse consume everything. We can fight back—together.

Happy Castle Art Camp, our off-grid desert festival, is only the beginning. Our long-term vision is to spark a worldwide eco-village movement, expanding into a network of future Happy Castle Sister Cities. A better world isn’t a utopian fantasy—it’s something we can build, one community at a time.

Why Our Model Looks Different

We explored many cooperative structures before landing on our model. Some seemed too rigid, discouraging the kind of communal entrepreneurship we want to foster. Others failed to incentivize long-term commitment. Ultimately, we needed a system that rewards contribution while keeping the door open for new members to thrive.

At Happy Castle, ownership is earned, not bought. Your stake in the cooperative is based on the hours you contribute and the time you’ve been part of the organization. This mirrors stock ownership in a company but with key differences:

  • Long-Term Commitment Matters – Increased effort over time translates to higher salaries and a greater voice in business and financial decision-making.

  • No Buying Your Way In – Shares can’t be purchased. They must be earned through participation.

  • A Fast Track for Newcomers – Those willing to put in the work can quickly increase their stake in the cooperative.

Beyond that, individual Community Camps within Happy Castle can develop their own internal structures, including pay differentials for specialized labor. Residents are also encouraged to pursue entrepreneurial and artistic endeavors within the community, keeping 50% of the profits they generate. This model does allow for some significant income stratification based on effort and contribution but prevents the absurd wealth disparities seen in mainstream society. We predict that most members, in terms of benefits and daily wages, will make far more than they typical American worker for far more interesting efforts.

Transparency & Feedback: A Work in Progress

Let’s be honest: talking about money is uncomfortable. Many of us dream of a world without it, a world of abundance where work and life are seamlessly integrated. While we’re not there yet, we believe the path to a moneyless future starts with innovating our relationships to production and ownership. Besides that, there are so many connotations associated with income-sharing communes, wealth redistribution, and ownership already.

We know our system isn’t perfect, and we expect challenges. That’s why we’ve built in participatory processes to address issues as they arise. Every member’s stipend is internally transparent and subject to consensus-based referendums. If something isn’t working, we fix it—together.

This is our best attempt at reimagining a sustainable, cooperative economy with collective purpose. Those who help build this vision from the start—and those who join along the way—should prosper with it.

Happy Castle is more than a project; it’s a movement. Let’s build the future we want to live in.
